ATMC Extends Hours of Operation (2/22/2010)
Shallotte, NC – Allen Russ, CEO/General Manager of ATMC, has announced that the cooperative will be extending its hours of operation beginning March 1, 2010. In addition, ATMC will also now be open on the Friday after Thanksgiving and on Christmas Eve.
New hours will be Monday through Friday, 8AM-6PM, excluding holidays. This includes both the Shallotte and Sunset Beach locations. The Repair Department will continue with its Saturday schedule of 8AM-5PM response to trouble reports.
“Our customers are our first priority and extending our business hours and remaining open on the day after Thanksgiving and on Christmas Eve will allow us to better serve them,” commented Mr. Russ. He added, “We recognize that we have many customers who work until 5:00 and are unable to get to our offices if they need to make payments or add services. We hope this change will make doing business with ATMC more convenient.”

Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame Announces 2010 Events and Inductees (2/17/2010)
Wilmington, NC – The Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame has selected its 2010 slate of honorees. This year’s class includes Ben Bourgeois, Terry Holland, Joe Miller, and Sherriedale Morgan (posthumously).
The GWSHOF was formed in 2006 in order to honor those who have brought recognition to the Greater Wilmington area and themselves, by their excellence in the sports world. Snow brightens Brunswicks Little Princess Ball (2/16/2010)
Southport, NC – A procession of princesses from across the county traveled through a winder wonderland to attend the sold-out 2nd Annual Little Princess Ball with the special men in their lives. A joint venture by Brunswick County Parks and Recreation and Communities In Schools (CIS), the Ball attracted over two hundred fifty kindergarten to fifth grade girls and their fathers, grandfathers, uncles, or other male role models. “For two hours my daughter had my undivided attention, something that doesn’t happen every day,” said CIS Board Member Alan Cheatham whose daughter Catherine attends Union Elementary School. “Girls from every walk of life were made to feel like princesses, and every man there can be proud of having taken the time to make them feel that way.”

National Weather Service Names Brunswick Community Hospital as North Carolina’s Second StormReady Ho (2/16/2010)
Supply, NC – The National Weather Service recently named Brunswick Community Hospital a StormReady Supporter for the hospital’s exemplary efforts in storm preparedness. Brunswick Community Hospital is only the second hospital in North Carolina to receive this prestigious recognition.

State Health Program to Enroll People with Pre-existing Conditions (2/16/2010)
Shallotte, NC – William Roy admits his weight used to be an issue, and he has Type 2 Diabetes. When his employer stopped offering health insurance, Roy found he was uninsurable by traditional insurers.
“Nobody wanted to take me in so I was one of the Americans without health insurance,” said Roy, a minister with Old Zion Wesleyan Church.
But last April, Roy found coverage through Inclusive Health, a state program offering affordable insurance to individuals with pre-existing medical conditions. The Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce was happy to walk away with two awards from the Carolina ShowFest conference held in Charlotte, NC. This conference is joint conference between the North Carolina Association of Festivals and Events and the South Carolina Association of Festivals and Events. The North Carolina Oyster Festival won Photo of the Year and Sponsor Packet of the Year. The photo was taken by Events Director Megan Masser during the exciting seconds of the North Carolina Shucking Competition. This event takes place every year at 4:00pm on the Saturday of the NC Oyster Festival. There are two divisions to the Oyster Shucking competition – amateur and professional. Brunswick Nuclear Plant to test sirens at full volume (11/17/2009)
SOUTHPORT, NC – The annual full-volume test of the public notification sirens located within 10 miles of the Brunswick Nuclear Plant will be conducted Wednesday, November 18 starting at 10 a.m. The test is part of Progress Energy’s comprehensive emergency planning program performed in cooperation with the State of North Carolina and Brunswick and New Hanover counties.
During this test, all of the sirens will sound at the same time for three-minute intervals. The sirens are tested on a regular basis to ensure the system is in good working order. A full-volume test is conducted once per calendar year.
Because this siren activation is a test, local television and radio stations will not interrupt their regular programming to broadcast Emergency Alert System (EAS) messages.
