BCC to hold golf tournament in memory of David Sandifer     (7/23/2008)

SUPPLY, N.C. –  The Brunswick Community College Foundation is pleased to announce the David R. Sandifer Scholarship Tournament will be held Friday, September 12, 2008 at St. James Plantation Member Course.  The tournament is open to the public and begins at 10:00 a.m.  

The tournament is named in honor of David Sandifer, who was Chairperson of the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners.  Mr. Sandifer passed away in 2008. 



Hurricane Dolly makes landfall     (7/23/2008)

Hurricane Dolly made landfall in South Padre Island and is expected to move farther inland over southern Texas later today.

 

A hurricane warning remains in effect for the coast of Texas from Brownsville to Corpus Christi, and for the northeastern coast of Mexico



Tropical Storm Cristobal skirts coast; Dolly forms in Gulf of Mexico     (7/21/2008)

The tropics are beginning to heat up as we enter the third week of July.  Tropical Storm Cristobal skirted the North Carolina coast this weekend before heading out to sea, while Tropical Storm Bertha has become extratropical over the far north Atlantic.  As Bertha and Cristobal move away from the U.S., Tropical Storm Dolly has formed in the Gulf of Mexico.

Leland Police Department sponsoring "National Night Out" event on Aug. 5     (7/14/2008)

LELAND, N.C. -- On Tuesday August 5, the Leland Police Department and Leland residents will join more than 10,000 other communities to participate in "National Night Out Against Crime" (NNO).  The local event is slated to run from 3 to 9 p.m. and will be held at the town's pavilion, located behind the Leland Town Hall at 102 Town Hall Drive.



Leland Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department obtains rescue certifications     (7/9/2008)

LELAND, N.C. --The Leland Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department (LVFRD) was recently certified to provide three rescue procedures by the North Carolina Association of Rescue and Emergency and Medical Services. The department was certified as a provider of Heavy Rescue, High Angle Rescue and Open Water (Still Water) Rescue.

Saving gas with new student-focused scheduling at BCC     (7/8/2008)

SUPPLY, N.C. – Because gas prices should never keep a student from completing his or her education, Brunswick Community College (BCC) developed a student-focused schedule that helps students save gas.  BCC has had a four-day calendar in effect for several years to make college courses more convenient for working students, but is now doing more to assist students.  The student-focused schedule offers students courses one, two or three days each week on campus and combines online options students can complete at home.  The result is less time on the road and more time learning.

Gov. Easley announces film production adds $160 million to N.C. economy     (7/14/2008)

RALEIGH Gov. Mike Easley today announced that spending by film, television and commercial production companies increased to $160.2 million in North Carolina in 2007, a 61 percent increase from 2006.  Contributing to last year’s increase were in-state production of two major motion pictures, “Leatherheads” and “Nights in Rodanthe,” as well as the CW Network’s television series “One Tree Hill.”

Gov. Easley pushes legislation to help homeowners avoid foreclosure     (7/3/2008)

RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley recently called on the General Assembly to give quick approval to legislation that will help thousands of homeowners with exploitive subprime mortgages avoid foreclosure.  The legislation requires that borrowers receive at least 45 days notice before foreclosure proceedings are started and directs the state Banking Commissioner to work with individual borrowers and their lenders to find ways to save their homes.
