Cape Fear River Watch Day on the Water. Location: Mill Creek
Water Access Site, 844 Appleton Way in Leland, 2 p.m. - 7 p.m. $10
for Cape Fear River Watch members, $20 for nonmembers (Event ticket
includes paddle, dinner, educational presentation and live music).
Cape Fear River Watch is hosting the second annual “Day on the
Water” in partnership with the Town of Leland. This will be the
kickoff for a series for fun paddles on local watersheds throughout
the year. Highlights include educational presentations on the
efforts to preserve Eagle’s Island and bird watching, live music and
a dinner catered by Middle of the Island. Bring your kayak, canoe or
paddleboard and get ready for a fun afternoon. Rentals will be

USCG Station Oak Island Expo/Safety Day sponsored by the U.S. Coast

a multi-agency safety exhibition with a military EXPO FREE fun for
the whole family and everyone is welcome to come. There are plenty
of things to see and do for the whole family. Our participants to
include military units as well as local safety and emergency
services organizations. Events, Exhibits, Games for All Ages Step
aboard Coast Guard boats from Oak Island, Wrightsville Beach, and
visit the Cape Fear's newest aids to navigation cutter 'USCGC
Bayberry'. There are helicopters - Army Black Hawk, Navy Sea
Stallion, USCG Seahawks and Dolphins, SABLE and Life Flight helos.
Visit with local, county and state police, sheriff and fire and
rescue departments. Watch S.W.A.T team and Bomb Squad
demonstrations. We have games for the children and the opportunity
to throw a 'rescue line' to Oscar in the water. There will be boats
from Oak Island Water Rescue, North Carolina Wildlife, Sea Tow, Boat
US, Bald Head Island Water Rescue, Cape Fear Pilots, MOTSU and Coast
Guard Auxiliary. The Navy is planning to do a fly-over and the
Marines plan a Harrier landing." Food Bank to Benefit The station
has 'partnered' with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North
Carolina and their People Helping People - 'collecting food to beat
hunger' program. You can bring a non-perishable food item to the
station anytime However there will be a collection area on the 9th,
at the station, for food donations. The goal is to collect 2000
pounds of non-perishable goods.
